How Bowen Works

A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle rolling moves with frequent pauses between moves, giving the body time to benefit from each set and process the information it is receiving.

Bowenwork releases muscle tissue tension patterns, which may seem subtle at first, but the effects build as the body begins to respond. Given that our bodies are mostly water, the rapid displacement of muscle back to its original resting place, is believed to create a 'soliton' wave, of the same type as a tsunami. And similar to the tsunami, Bowen moves carry large amounts of energy over long distances. The pauses or 'waits' between sets of moves, allow time for these waves to dissipate before adding more moves.

Bowenwork's unique way of moving structures crosswise against the collagen, stimulates the maximum piezoelectric current, and proprioceptor involvement after the moves are completed. When the client begins to move again, the proprioceptors detect changes and reset to a new level, which is why walking after a treatment is so important, allowing the proprioceptors to reset to optimal tension levels.

Practitioners treat the body as a whole but can also target a specific problem, by pinpointing stress buildup in muscle groups and releasing it. Bowenwork both balances and stimulates, and the restorative process begins once the body is no longer in a state of sympathetic hyper-innervation (fight or flight).

Clients often describe a deep state of relaxation, a feeling of peace and calm, as well as a more positive frame of mind less affected by stress, and they make better decisions.

Bowen is Holistic

Bowenwork is perhaps one of the single most important tools we have to help heal the body. The moves produce good results by penetrating to a deep cellular level, making use of the body’s own ability to heal itself. Bowenwork affects the body in a holistic way that creates harmony throughout the different systems of the body.

Bowenwork moves begin to achieve balance right away, embracing the client’s physical and emotional aspects.
